Firsthand – a monthly Journal Club

On July 2, 2020, Dr. Glickel was the special guest on the American Society for Surgery of the Hand’s new monthly online journal club entitled “Firsthand”. He discussed the topic of thumb arthritis and its treatment providing a historical perspective. Arthritis of the joint at the base of the thumb is very common, particularly in women. The main symptom is pain. Techniques used to treat it have evolved over the past few decades and Dr. Glickel has contributed to the medical literature on the subject.

The journal club was a lively discussion between Dr. Glickel and the other panelist, Dr. Peter Stern who has also written a lot on the subject. The session was moderated by Drs. Christopher Dy and Megan Conti Mica who posed a number of questions many of which were selected from the online audience.

The Littler Legacy

The Littler Legacy, published in 2020, is a book about hand surgery but is really an art book. It pays homage to J. William Littler, M.D., my mentor in hand surgery and arguably one of the few greatest hand surgeons of the twentieth century. He was also a brilliantly talented artist and the majority of his drawings were of hands. His patient records were drawings of their hands and whatever clinical problem they manifested. This book is a compilation of those drawings with annotations of each by the authors.

Dr. Glickel is the recipient of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand’s 2020 David P. Green Mentorship Award.

Dr. Glickel is the recipient of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand’s 2020 David P. Green Mentorship Award. According to the description of the award by the AFSH, “this award was created in honor of David P. Green, MD, a selfless mentor. In creating this award, we hope to accomplish two important goals: to honor a person who has given so much to hand surgery, worked hard to spread knowledge and invested in countless others, and in so doing, to honor and encourage others who have committed their careers to doing the same”. Dr. Glickel will moderate and give a lecture at the David P. Green Excellence in Mentorship Award Instructional Course Lecture at the Annual Meeting of the ASSH on October 2, 2020. The other members of the ICL faculty will be Peter Stern, M.D., James Chang, M.D. and Scott Kozin, M.D.

Dr. Glickel was the Invited Guest Speaker of the Israeli Society for Surgery of the Hand and the Israeli Orthopaedic Association

Dr. Glickel was the Invited Guest Speaker of the Israeli Society for Surgery of the Hand and the Israeli Orthopaedic Association on December 10 and 11, 2019. He was very actively involved in their academic program giving 6 lectures on a variety of topics in hand surgery including scaphoid fractures, Dupuytren Disease, boutonierre deformity, post traumatic instability of the thumb, basal joint disease and treatment of post traumatic arthritis of the wrist. In addition, he did a live surgical demonstration of the technique of needle aponeurotomy. That is a minimally invasive procedure for treating Dupuytren contracture in which the cord is cut at several strategic locations disrupting its continuity and then the finger is manually straightened correcting the contracture. The patient is able to move the finger post operatively and generally does not require hand therapy. Dr. Glickel stayed in Israel with his wife for a week after the meeting visiting Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and Caesarea soaking in the heritage and sampling the excellent Israeli cuisine in each city. They also had dinner with Amira Dotan the first woman to achieve the rank of Brigadier General in the Israeli Defense Forces and who subsequently became a member of the Knesset.

2019 Lifetime Achievement Award annoucement

Dear Members, On behalf of the New York Society for Surgery of the Hand Executive Committee, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr. Steven Glickel has been chosen as the society’s 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award winner. We all know that Steve is more than deserving of this award. Steve is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone Health and is the Director of Hand Surgery at The Roosevelt Hand to Shoulder Center at OrthoManhattan. From 2001 to 2016, he was the Director of the C.V. Starr Hand Surgery Center at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center. Steve has trained many of the pre-eminent hand surgeons in practice today, including many members of the NYSSH and leaders of the ASSH. Steve served as President of the ASSH from 2007-2008, Chair of the AFSH from 2016-2018, and of course, President of the NYSSH from 2001-2002. He has published many of the seminal papers in our hand surgery literature and has lectured throughout the world. On top of all of his numerous accomplishments, Steve is a really nice guy and a true gentleman in every sense of the word! Steven Z. Glickel Elected President of American Society for Surgery of the Hand

Steven Z. Glickel, MD, C.V. Starr Hand Surgery Center, St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital, New York, NY, was elected the 62nd President of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) at the Society’s Annual Meeting — September 27-29, 2007 — in Seattle, WA.

A Hand Society member since 1987, Dr. Glickel graduated from Harvard Medical School. Thereafter, he completed two years of residency in general surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, NY, and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Program, Boston, MA. In 1981, he completed a research fellowship in Microsurgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, NY, followed by a one year hand surgery fellowship at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, New York, NY, where he trained under the supervision of ASSH founding member J. William Littler, MD and Richard G. Eaton, MD. Dr. Glickel is currently the Director of the C.V. Starr Hand Surgery Center at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center and Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Columbia University.

Dr. Glickel will chair the Hand Society’s 15-member Council and lead its 2,500 members during his presidency. “One of the imperatives of leadership of any organization is for the members of the governing body to always remain cognizant of who they serve and how best to serve them,” says Dr. Glickel. Among the themes of his Presidential year will be ethics and professionalism, education and active engagement of the membership.
